31 Days of Oscar Now Playing on Turner Classic Movies

Turner Classic Movies is a great channel to check out any time, but it’s especially cool in February when the movie network for movie lovers highlights Oscar winning films from all eras. TCM’s February schedule.

The honored film might have won for Best Picture or Best Actor, or it might have been noteworthy for something like Sound Editing. This way, they can show films like Them! and Close Encounters of the Third Kind alongside more traditional fare like My Fair Lady and Fellini’s 8 1/2.

Why 31 Days of Oscar? Blame the capricious Academy scheduling. Historically, the Oscars were in March, allowing moviegoers plenty of time to catch up on nominated films and the studios time to big pimp their product. Then someone decided to shorten the big pimping season and so moved the Oscars to February.

TCM hilariously left their festival at 31 days while the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences continued to futz with the schedule. (This year, the Oscars are on February 26th.)

Check out a single day on the schedule, Saturday, February 11th, an eclectic stream of fine films. (All times EST.)

8am: 42nd Street (1933)
9:45am: The Naked City (1948)
11:30am: The Awful Truth (1937)
1:15pm: On The Waterfront (1954)
3:15pm: Going My Way (1944)
5:30pm: The Best Of Everything (1959)
8:00pm: Wait Until Dark (1967)
10:00pm: The Apartment (1960)
12:15am: Three Days of the Condor (1975)
2:30am: Gloria (1980)
4:45am: Kramer vs. Kramer (1979)

(Okay, I haven’t actually seen The Best of Everything, but I’m sure it’s a fine film. The others are all outstanding. Fire up the DVR.)

I’m very excited to see Bless the Beasts and the Children on Friday the 24th, a terrific film from the 70s that I haven’t seen since the 70s. Okay, maybe it won’t be as terrific as I remember, but I’m still happy to see it again.

Check out the juicy movie goodness on Turner Classic Movies throughout February and beyond.
